I have downloaded from our MSDN the English version of the SQL R2 INstall. When I attempt to install this on a Windows 2008R2 server that is English I get that error. Any Ideas?

Hi,
I suggest you re-download the setup and install SQL Server 2008 R2 again. If it sill fails, you could vote on the feedbacks that Alerto mentioned or submit a new feedback on http://connect.microsoft.com.
If you have any more questions, please let me know.
Thanks.

I had the same error while installing R2 the other day, it gets you in a vicious cycle to where it does not install correctly and then will not even uninstall. luckily I was working in a virtual environment and could snapshot my server and rollback when the install failed. Only way I got around the error was to redownload the install media (actually I had to download media from my Technet subscription as my MSDN download kept giving the same error), I think it essentioally was corrupt media download but cannnot verify.

Hello,
Please go to Control Panel->Regional Setting and change the “Fomat” language to English(United States) or the same language of the setup media. After that, re-run SQL Server 2008 R2 setup.
For more information about this issue, please see workarounds and Microsoft posts on the following links:

I have tried doing that and the outcome is no different. The Regional setting of the windows server is set to "English (United States)" and the downloaded media is the English iso image form MSDN for SQL server r2 standard edition.

I have the same issue. English ISO from MSDN will not install on an English Windows Server 2008 R2. I've downloaded the file 3 times already, and the result is always the same. There is some sort of error in the bootstrap setup.rll file that blows up the entire process. Does anyone have any additional suggestions?Monday, July 26, 2010 1:45 AM

I was getting this error in addition to one about setup.rll not being valid. I just copied setup.dll from the \resources folder n the CD (ISO) to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2008R2\Resources\1033\

Yep, thank you thank you thank you CanadaDev, I believe you meant the setup.rll, because that is indeed what does the trick. Which is a lot better than reinstall!
MS should improve this install process on non-US systems (looks like its surprisingly easy to have a corrupt file these days - is nothing ever simple anymore?), it's a real killer!

For those at Microsoft keeping score, copying the setup.rll file was what worked in my case as well. Bad ISO @ the download site?Wednesday, May 25, 2011 9:39 PM

Ive discovered the issue is unpacking this ISO with winzip or mounting it with VMWARE
If you unpack the ISO with winrar instead, there are no errors. I used the proposed fix and still had an error installing the database engine services, but when unpacked with winrar everything worked fine.

I had to do this as well in order to uninstall.

Thanks CanadaDev! I had downloaded the file again, in response to the corrupt media suggestion, which wasted an hour. I then tried the setup.rll renaming suggestion, also a waste of time. Then I copied setup.rll from another system that had installed correctly, and it fixed the issue. I think your reply should be marked as the answer! CorboWednesday, January 25, 2012 5:56 PM

I'm installing SQL 2008 R2 onto a Windows 2012 server. I tried all the suggested offerings from a wide variety of helpful sites, but I still got the ENU error. Attempted solutions included:
- Ssetting the regional settings to US
- Switching to another language and back again
- Copying the setup.rll file into the bootstrap folder
- Downloading again
- Using a different download ISO (180 day trial instead of standard MSDN)
- Extracting the ISO with WinRAR instead of WinZip
- Disabling switchback compatibility
Nothing worked. Luckily I'm in a HyperV guest and can rollback after each failure.
I finally used the SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise installation instead of the Standard Edition, but entered my standard edition key (which caused it to still install standard edition instead of enterprise), and while it still threw the error, the installer got past it and kept going. Finally I have a successful install!
