Scaling multiple SQL Server 2012 SSRS instances using Windows Container - licensing? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

We work on an SaaS product that offers reporting functionality using SQL Server 2012 SSRS. More frequently, we are needing to add new instances of SSRS for new clients, on the understanding that multiple instances of SSRS on a single VM are covered by a single SQL license.

Our process of installing new SSRS instances on an existing production server has so far been infrequent, manual, error prone and liable to take production services down in the event of misconfiguration. With more demand for new SSRS instances, I want to move to automating this provisioning.

We would consider provisioning entirely new Windows VMs with single instances of SSRS on them to give us good isolation between the instances, however the Windows + SQL license costing of this approach is likely to be prohibitive.

My question is, can we put SQL Server 2012 SSRS instances into containers running under Windows Containers, thereby running multiple SSRS instances on one VM? And if so, is this covered by a traditional per-core SQL license for the underlying VM, or do we need to somehow obtain SQL licensing for each container separately?
