Making my Web Application as Fast as possible and removing the Session Variables. RRS feed

I have a very basic but very important question for all the web developers especially the ASP.NET gurus. I am currently working on a web application in which i access the data from SQL Server 2005 and then store it in Session variable. Actually the DataSet is stored in session variable for each page and then when i click on the next page i clear that session variable . in this way i try to make my web application fast . I also do take a precaution that whenever i update the database i take up the new dataset and  replace the session variable.

But then i came to know that using Session Variables and also storing the DataSets in Sessions can make a web application slow. My question is that how can we store the data from the database so that we can have less no of postbacks to the server and the web application bacomes fast.

Please suggest some other technique in ASP.NET.
