VSTO vs Shared Add-In for a Word application RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, my customer - a big multinational company - asked me to upgrade a COM Add-In for Word, developed years ago, from VB6 to .NET.

The application is about 30000 lines of code, and we figure that effort will be about 4 months. It must be installed and maintained on thousands of computers, so deployment can be an issue (although in this case the shared add-in could win, as the deployment has been done until now). It shall work on Word 2007 and 2010.

I have seen that still there are 2 roads, VSTO or Shared add-in. What is the better road between them in general and in such scenario?

    Thanks, Fabrizio
