2016 CU2 upgrade failure on R services

    General discussion

  • The problem I was having is that After applying CU2 it would not update R services and polybase, both services would then shut down due to being at a different patch levels.  After digging into the Polybase logs about failure to download various versions of SRO.  This is due to my servers being cut from the internet.  See below for answer.  Exact error message you get will be included once I can reproduce the erorr...might take little.

Reproduced errors using SP1 patch CU2 patch error will look the same with a slightly different download link:

  • @Gaadsfasd, you must have some type of internet connectivity since you are posting here.  Go to a machine that has internet connectivity and past in the URLs that have failed ...  from "Starting download: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=808803&clcid=1033"

Save the SRO_3.2.2.10000_1033.cab file to a flash drive and copy the files over to the SQL instance that you are trying to patch.  You might try copying it to "SomeDirectory\SRO_3.2.2.10000_1033.cab" and re-running the Setup of R Server to see if that works ... otherwise you might have to install the .cab

The .cab Cabinet file is a compressed archive that cannot be ran or executed directly.

Windows has built-in support to open and view .cab archive content, but not outright install the .cab even if it’s intended as an update package or hotfix. In order to install a manually downloaded .cab Cabinet file, use the following trick that makes use of pkgmgr.exe (Windows Package Manager) instead.

Open an elevated privileges command prompt as administrator, and run the following command to install and integrate the Cabinet archive:

    pkgmgr /ip /m:<path><file name>.cab /quiet
    Or,
    start /wait pkgmgr /ip /m:<path><file name>.cab /quiet

Replace <path> with the path (location) to the .cab file, and <file name> with the actual file name of the .cab file, without parenthesis. If the Cabinet file is located on the current directory (same directory where command is ran, the path can be skipped.

Tip: If you intend to save an installation log, append the /l:<path><file name>.log to the end of the command. Again, replace <path><file name>.cab with the file name of log file to save to with its folder location (path).

  • If there was ANY way to contact mods in the first place besides report abuse...that would be helpful if there is one, let me know and can fill you in on why it was done.
Unfortunately forum does not have such feature apart from putting a comment in the question that please look into the thread, I am active Mod and will surely respond. What i was pointing is you should not change question COMPLETELY and put some garbage character. Now tell me how can I help you ?

    Cheers,

    Shashank
