    It depends on what you're trying to track and do.

    For instance the Kinect v2 can track 6 persons reliably up to 4.5 meters. The fidelity has not been published yet, all we know thus far is that it is 3x (3 times) more resolution than v1. As far as optimal resolution - the Human Interaction Guideline (HIG) document Microsoft publishes will provide these details.

    For object detection through custom code, the Kinect v2 can track objects reliably up to 8 meters. Keep in mind you have to build the algorithm to do this as this is not apart of the Kinect for windows v2 SDK.

  • Dear Dwight-Goins,

    Thanks for the response. I know for a fact that for Kinect v1, depth sensor is specified by the manufacturer as having a valid operation from 1.2 meters to 3.5 meters, however, there are some literature that say the optimal performance at 1mm depth, increasing to more than 5 mm when less than 85cm or more than 120cm depth. I was wondering if anyone worked such measurement for Kinect v2?
