How do I keep EW from changing url codes when saving a page? RRS feed

  • Question

  • EW re-writes link to relative paths, and when the page is uploaded of course, the links don't work. This is really irritating. How do I stop this?

  • What is your workflow?

There are only two circumstances when I know that occurs:

    1. working on a remote site using a server path //server/filepath, or
    2. working on individual pages without opening a defined site

  • Cheryl, would you give an example of item 2? I am thinking of trying EW 4 but won't do it if EW will change paths in my files. (I would only use EW to work on individual pages without opening a defined site.)

  • Unless you are working in a defined site EW (all versions as far as I know) will always use relative paths. You presumably have a website to which the pages belong, so open the site itself first, and then work on the pages.

  • Example of #2 - Anything other than having Expression Web open and using Site > Open Site (or in v1-2 File > Open Site) then using Folder List to select the file you want to work on.

  • I was actually hoping to see an example of how URLs might be modified by EW if I don't work within a "defined site".

Ian, I don't think I can work in the mode you described because most of my projects are dynamic websites that I develop using MVC approach. I have controller script stored in one place, template HTML (augmented HTML, that is) files  in another, resources (images, JS files, CSS files) in yet another place. All this comes together at run time, and I don't think EW can handle this during design time. Final paths are different from those used during design time. That's why I don't want EW to change paths I set in HTML template files.

  • You may be stuck using Visual Studio then.

Typically the file paths will be changed to drive_letter:/folder/file path because EW has no frame of reference.
