confusion - can kinect work with windows 10? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am new to kinect. Can anybody confirm whether kinect can work with windows 10?

In the kinect for windows sdk downloading link it only lists down windows 8----->

But kinect FAQ says windows 10 is possible.----->

Which of the above is correct?

I am asking this before changing my OS.

  • Windows Desktop Applications using kinect work fine under windows 10, so if that's what you want, it's fine.

What we cannot do, yet, is program Universal Windows Applications with Kinect.

  • Hi,

If I am using windows 10 and writing a program to work on another windows 10 machine it should work that means? It will not be working in a windows 8 machine? Is that right?

  • Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10 are all supported.

You can write apps on those OS-es and run apps on those OS-es.

  • Just to clarify what Vicente Penades said: there is a kind of Windows application (Universal Windows Platform apps) that allows you run your app in any device running Windows, be it a desktop computer, tablet, phone... that's what Vicente meant you cannot do with Kinect.

  • All right, thanks for the clarification.

  • your application will work fine in windows 10, but you still need to write the project for windows 8.1 as the FAQ said

... Be sure to select “Windows 8.1” as a supported target during application authoring to ensure that your application also runs on Windows 10.

if what you mean by "work with windows 10" is UWP(universal windows platform) i don't think K4W team has already made the SDK compatible for it.

  • The lack of UWP means no support for Xbox One apps too? Or will Xbox run W8.1 apps too? Also why not update the driver to 1511 officially?

  • Exactly, as long as there's no support for UWP, we cannot target XBOX.

About why not update the driver? ... this is the big question we're all waiting to be answered.
