Why can i not restore Windows Server 2008 R2 using vssadmin snapshot of system drive? RRS feed

  • Question

  • The System Protection wizard in Windows 7 exposes the functionality to create restore points and perform system restore. These restore points have two significant differences from the wbadmin backup functionality of Windows 2008 R2.

    1. The restore points are incremental backups (using shadow copy), including the first one. In contrast, the first backup using wbadmin has to be a full backup.
    2. Win 7 restore points can be stored on system drive, whereas wbadmin requires a separate volume.

Even with Windows 2008 R2, I am able to snapshot the system drive using vssadmin (volume shadow copy). Is there a way to write a custom backup / restore tool which can restore to such a volume snapshot? Why doesn't wbadmin or the Restore GUI recognize them as valid targets for a restore operation.
