Excel 2010 giving 'Excel 4.0 function stored in defined names' on new workbook without macros and no defined names RRS feed

  • Question

  • Don't know if this is the place to ask this, but web search does not turn up a solution.

    Office 2010 Pro

    Excel 2010

    Windows 7 Pro fully updated

Create a new workbook.  Work with it.  Save it as default xlsx.  Excel gives this message.

"Excel 2010 The following features cannot be saved in macro-free workbooks: Excel 4.0 function stored in defined names. To save a file with these features, click No, and then choose a macro-enabled file type in the File Type list."

There are no macros created. Macro list is empty.

There are no defined names. Defined names list is empty.

What's going on? How can this warning be suppressed with default settings?

  • It sounds like something in the file is being wrongly detected as an xl4 function. Can you upload a non-sensitive file to a file sharing site (eg that replicates the problem. First save the file as an xlsm as described. Open a copy of it and attempt to save-as an xlsx and check it generates the message, then upload the xlsm so we can try the same.
