encoder counts show up as joystick RRS feed

  • Hello,
    How can i use MSRobotics to make an optical encoder show up as a joystick in Winxp. Any ideas?

  • I'm not sure exactly what you mean.

    Encoders will not appear as a joystick for standard .NET applications unles you write a device driver.

    However, you could write a service under RDS that implements the Game Controller contract to make the encoders appear similar to a joystick. However, there is a fundamental issue here -- encoders output "ticks" as you move them. They do not give you an absolute position -- you have to count the ticks. A joystick on the other hand gives you a position. So encoders are more like a mouse than a joystick. Also, you will need two encoders for the X and Y directions, although you probably realize this.
