I would look at the link that follows for information on .Hlp files. However it does state "The .hlp format, developed by Microsoft, is not officially documented" and the link was last update 01 Feb 2012 so it should be relevant information. Woops, forgot the link.

Am I right in assuming that you wish me to tell you somthing about myself here.
From 1968-1997 I worked for 3M (U.K.) as a computer programmer in many computer languages and Assembler languages. Since I left 3M I have concentrated on Reverse engineering and other highly technical stuff like that. What details do you wish to know about me?

Hi Michael,
Respectively, sorry, most of the forum members do not need to know your background - employment history.
Save it for your resume - c.v. ( curriculum vitae ).
'
You can, if you wish, put some of the above detail in your profile.
Click on the text My Profile
in the blue text under My Forum Links ( or click the above link )
on the right-hand side of this website page, then you can click on EDIT MY PROFILE under your name
on the left or you can just click this link.>>

" I just need a few more details about your situation"
Currently I'm at home, sitting at my keyboard in front of my monitor typing into a message editor window within the MSFT VB general forum. .... Why you ask?

The subject line is made for entering the topic of the question. It is possible to enter something different from "Computer Programmer".

Hi Michael,
Welcome to the MSDN forum.
>> "In a .HLP file I wish to determine a contextual help ID so"
Would you like to share more information about your issue? I have no idea about whether it has relationship with VB.Net.
Have a nice day.
