How to unpin from start during installation?

    Question

  • For a desktop application, we would like create a application shortcut in start menu for windows 7 compatibility ( we put shortcut file in folder "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs").

If it is installed in Windows 8, we would not like the shortcut pin at following "start" screen as a tile.

How can we do for it in our installation package? Is there are some way to unpin by coding?

  • There is no way to control installation process (such as custom install location) against Metro Style App, which is different from desktop app installation.

Usually, you can pin or unpin a secondary tile via app bar command programmatically.

Developers can use the app bar to provide the option to pin and unpin content on the Start screen. Windows supplies pin glyphs (WinJS.UI.AppBarIcon.pin and WinJS.UI.AppBarIcon.unpin) to match the personality of the app bar, as well as an implementation of the necessary code that the glyph should launch to accomplish its pinning or unpinning action.

Please refer to Quickstart: Pinning a secondary tile for more details.

  • I'm sorry for not clear question....

The question title should be: "How to unpin desktop app shortcut from start screen during installation?".

Actually, I means the desktop application NOT metro style apps.

During desktop application installation, such as Office 2007 installation, it is necessary to install the shortcut to "start menu" in Windows 7, but if it is installed in Windows 8, we would not like the shortcut pin to "Start Screen" tile in windows 8.

Our background is that, we would like to use a commom desktop installation package in both Win7 and Win8. For Win7, it need the startmenu shortcut to launch; For win8, it should not show the link in "start screen".

How can we do? or How to unpin the desktop app shortcut from start screen?

Is there some registry or XML to config this start screen?

  • Hi,

This forum is specific to Metro Style App development. Your target app is specific to desktop.

Please re-post your question to General Windows Desktop Development Issues forum to get more help.
