Ugrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL Server 2014 SP1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I tryied to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL Server 2014 SP1, but the upgrade failed in the Feature Rules step, and exactly in SQL Server 2014 Feature Upgrade saying that this rule failed.

Here is a post that contains the same error with another Sql Server edition :

    http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2016/07/25/sql-server-installation-featureupgradematrixcheck-sql-server-2016-feature-upgrade-setup-rule-failed/

The error code is : FeatureUpgradeMatrixCheck

Is there anyone who knows the cause of this problem?

  • Hi ZakBEL,

You are able to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL Server 2014 SP1.

However, there are some restrictions in editions when you update SQL Server. For example, we are not able to upgrade a SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Enterprise edition to SQL Server 2014 standard edition, only can update to SQL Server 2014 Enterprise and SQL Server 2014 Business Intelligence edition. For more details, please review this article: Supported Version and Edition Upgrades.

Regarding to your issue, please use the following Transaction-SQL to verify the current edition of SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 you are using, then check if it can be upgraded to the current SQL Server 2014 edition.

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')

And you can upgrade your SQL Server using side-by-side upgrade method. In this method, the old instance is not touched. First, you install new instance of SQL Server 2014, then migrate SQL Server 20018 R2 database using backup and restore method. Also you need to migrate logins, linked server and jobs using this supported article.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.

    Regards,
    Angelia
