Visual Studio 2017 Community fails attempting to load new projects on new Dell core I7/7th gen running Windows 10 Pro

    Question

  • Can't use Visual Studio!

Error: 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.ProjectSystem.VS.Implementation.Package.ProjectPackage' package did not load correctly.

Attempts to clear C:\Users\fscah\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_d2b793bb\ComponentModelCache has no effect.

Running command devenv\setup has no effect.

  • Hi F-Scott-Cahill,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

Does this issue happens when you try to load the existing projects or create new projects?

Refer to the error message, please have a try with the following to troubleshot:

    1. Close all VS instances and remove or delete the following folders, restart VS to test it again

    C:\Users\<your users name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_xxxxx

    C:\Users\<your users name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_xxxxx

    2. Re-run the VS 2017 installer as administrator and click the icon beside ‘Modify’, ‘Launch’ and choose ‘Repair’

    3. Run the commands as below and open VS to check this issue.

    • devenv /resetuserdata: clear the old user data
    • devenv /safemode: run the VS as safe, if it works fine that means the installed extensions may be corrupted the VS, please go to Tool—Extensions and Updates… and remove all installed extensions one by one to find the culprit.

If this issue persists, I need your help to collect the log file: run the command: devenv /log in the evaluated command prompt. And upload the file (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Version\ActivityLog.xml) to https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

    Best regards,

    Sara
