Debug Excel Task Pane app with existing Excel file RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it possible to include (or reference) an existing Excel sheet so that you can use it for debugging within an App for Excel task pane Visual Studio project?

  • Absolutely!  Just go to the solution explorer, right-click anywhere within your app project, and click "Add" ==> "Existing Item...", adding your document.  I typically like to add it to a folder like "OfficeDocuments", but it's a personal preference.  Then, just set the app project's "Start Action" to the document -- see image below.

Note that on the first "F5", you will still need to add the task pane from the "Insert" ==> "Apps for Office" ==> "Developer apps" dropdown.  But, once you insert it, if you hit "Save", this will be persisted for future F5s.  Note that any changes you make to the document while it's running will get persisted if you click "save", so just realize you're editing a live document, not a copy (as you do in VSTO, for instance)

    Hope this helps,
