Detach a mirrored database RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a scenario where we have an actively mirrored database that needs to be changed to a different disk partition on the mirror server.  2 questions came to mind

    1.  Can you detach a mirrored database?
    2.  If so, will it totally break mirroring or after it is attached will mirroring automatically resume?

  • I think you are going to have to reset up mirroring in this case. You can detach the database, but you will have to break mirroring to do it. But, that doesn't buy you anything because you will not be able to use the database to restart mirroring.

Keep in mind when moving your mirrored data files that it is best practice to keep your data files located on the exact same drive structure as your principal. If you make an alteration to the principal database that references the drive location, those same modifications will be mirrored.
