  • Word contains no converter for the epub file format. That means there's absolutely nothing in the Word object model you can use.

    You'd need to write all the code from scratch if you really don't want to buy a third-party tool - re-invent the wheel, so to say.

    I have no idea about the epub file format, whether it's an open standard and how easy it is to generate. But I can tell you that the old, binary *.doc file format is NOT easy to read, although its specification is now publicly available.

    If you don't mean *.doc, but the newer *.docx, then this is open, reasonably easy to read and, since it's XML it's also possible to use XSLT to "convert" it to another form. If that is what you mean, then the best place for you to get started is probably OpenXMLDeveloper.org.
