Head Tracking for Project Cars RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is head tracking via Kinect v2 possible on the PC version of Project Cars? I know TrackIR is supported, so in theory it should be possible correct. How accurate is the head tracking on the v2?

  • Possible as "if the Project Cars developers wanted to include it" I suppose so. If you are asking if it is currently supported, I think it's a question for Project Cars forum.

I would say that head tracking with Kinect is qutie accurate, but I don't really know the requirements of that kind of game. Also I think it's common for PC gamers to use an "enviroment" (desktop computer) which makes more difficult to use a Kinect because of the minimum working distance (unlike a living room environment with a greater distance between the user and the screen where the sensor is usually attached).

  • Thanks for reply. The Project Cars forum is unsure also as no one that I have found has tried it. I just may have buy the hardware and try it myself. What programs are best used by the Kinect for close head tracking? And will the v2 work well with only a distance of 2-3ft from the user?

  • Kinect depth sensing range is 0.5-4.5 meters, but for body and face tracking of a seated user I would say that 3 ft is the minimum usable distance (it depends on the setting). The sensor should also be able to see the floor and recommended height is 6 ft, although many people is working in other conditions with good results.

I don't know the Project Cars forum, I supposed it would have some support section where the game developers "officially" answer that kind of question. If you can't find that and Kinnect support is not an announced feature, I'm quite sure it is not supported, since TrackIR and Kinect v2 are two different sensors which require separate developments (it's not like exchanging a gamepad).
