Connectivity issue with new (1.3) Management Portal / Manage SQL Server RRS feed

  • I'm having some connection issues when using the new Silverlight based Management Portal.

    1) Surf to the Portal (http://windows.azure.com/default.aspx).
    2) Select Database node on LHS.
    3) Expand Subscriptions (top, LHS) and select an existing database instance.
    4) Select the 'Manage' button on the top button bar.
    Enter the proper credentials.
    Get "There was an error connecting to the server". 

    Omitting most of the text, but I'm guessing the relevant portion is:

    "Client with IP address '65.52.22.187' is not allowed to access the server."

    That ain't one of my addresses!  Is this the Portal app server itself?
    When I added that IP address to the firewall rules and waited 5 minutes I was indeed able to connect to the DB via the https://manage-ch1.sql.azure.com portal.

    I'm further guessing this is a new-rollout goof and that someone forgot to add the load-balanced Portal server IP addresses to the SQL Azure side.
    If not, I suggest we advise people that they need to configure this in order for Houston (or whatever this Portal represents) to work.

  • In fairness there is a check-box on the 'Connect' dialog.  Checking that box seems to cure the problem.

    I was confused initially as to what that checkbox would do, and the help was not overly clear that it would "just let Houston see your database".
