Win 8 First Thoughts (under VirtualBox) RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Just installed the Developer Preview under VirtualBox. Unfortunately, it appears that the Guest Additions don't work correctly, though that doesn't inhibit installing and using Win8. Anyway. As I suspected from early screen shots, everything appears to be an "app." I'm sorry, but I don't get this. Microsoft is clearly no longer in "lead" mode, but is now in "follow" mode. Everybody else is doing "apps" so I guess Microsoft figured they needed to do that as well. The Start Menu (or what's left of it) is a total disaster. Instead of a text list of options, it's a pretty screen with giant apps (or "Tiles" as they're called). There appears to be no way to recover the old start menu, which is much faster for me. Furthermore, what is the purpose of the Desktop now? Windows Explorer has now gone totally into ribbon mode, which again, did not at all surprise me. Well, I'm a dinosaur (33 years old), so you might imagine that all these changes are so terribly unsettling :)

  • Lol Dinosaur...
I don't think many humans like the Metro UI either.

  • I love the Metro UI in windows phone 7. But I don't think it works on large screen and mouse as well solely by enlarging every tile.

How about making those tiles hovering upon the desktop (and make them some smaller to cover less desktop) when windows button is pressed? That should make launching an application program less disruptive to current views.
