In the hyper v, we run two other  virtual machine then would be require only 1 windows 2016 standard edition  or more ? will this 1 license cover three machine ( 1 host machine and 2 virtual machine)

  • Hi,

Windows 2016 standard edition will support 2 Virtual machine. But for the Base OS you must license fully.

For an example if your have 1 Physical socket with 2 Core, then the minimum 16 Core license you must apply.

All physical cores in the Server must be licensed (Hyperthreading (SMT) does not count as actual physical cores)

A minimum of 8 cores must be licensed for each processor

A minimum of 16 cores must be licensed for each Server

If you going to Run only 2 VM’s then no need any addition Licence. But make sure you have applied license for Base OS fully.

  • Hi Velmurugan,

    Thanks for the reply.

If I am not wrong, in your answer, you are referring Base Machine as Base OS right?

If so, got u. I too got the licensing Guide and Licensing Data Sheet for Windows Server 2016 which was very helpful.

    Thanks anyways,

    Regards,
