Office's XML files have a different icon in Windows. How ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
    I'm absolutely not sure if I found the good place to ask my question, but I googled and I can't find a word about the question i'm asking myself.
    I've noticed that XML files that have been generated by Word have a custom icon in Windows, while an empty XML file has another icon. They both have the same extension.

    I've noticed that changing the line
    <?mso-application progid="Word.Document"?>
    to another progid (e.g. Excel.Document) has an effect on which icon the file is displayed with.

    Does anyone has an idea on how did Microsoft to do this ? In my software, there is only one extension for my XML files, but many kinds of content in it.

    Thank you very much.
