  • It is indexes that make database look-ups fast.  Generally, databases can store data more compactly than text files because they store numbers in binary format.  SQL server should handle 40,000 requests per day on several gigabytes of data without any problem.

  • You can use StreamReader.ReadLine() to avoid loading the entire file.  To find a particular record fast you should use a database.
