  • BizTalk 2013 R2 is out of mainstream support since 10 July 2018 and goes out of extended support 11 July 2023.

Assuming you are going to Windows Server 2012 R2, which is out mainstream support since 9 Oct 2018 and out of extended support in 10 Oct 2023.

And SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 3, is out of mainstream support since 9 July 2019, and extended support until 9 July 2024.

So do you really want to go to all that effort to only get another two three and a half years of extended support?

I would advice setting up a new BizTalk environment, either BizTalk 2016 or even BizTalk 2020, and migrate the applications one by one.    This approach is more work, but much lower risk than attempting any in-place upgrade.

  • Well A) don't run server applications on desktop operating systems, and B) don't run software on unpatched operating systems.

As Colin points to, you can move to Windows Server 2012 R2 to buy yourself more time.  You will ultimately need to migrate your applications from 2013 R2 within the next three years to keep in support.

It's possible to do an in-place upgrade from 2013 R2 to 2016 (and then on to 2020) - but I don't know of anybody who would choose to do that instead of rebuilding and testing.
