Windows 10 Universal Apps running on Windows 8.1? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

hopefully someone can help me with a clarification: I have some Windows 8.1 Universal apps all written in javascript. In order to reach the maximum audience (which means that I also want to ship to Windows 8.1 / WP 8.1 users after Win 10 launch) and to get most benefits of Win 10 UAP, what do I need to do?

Do I need split the project into Win 8.1 and Win 10 and ship two versions of my app? Or can I ship a single version which runs on Win 8.1 / WP 8.1 but also on Win 10 with the new UAP benefits?

    Thanks

    Hish

  • You will not be able to use the new win 10 features in win 8.1.  You will need to ship two versions of the app if you want to use the newer features of win 10.  Keep in mind win 8.1 apps will run on win 10

  • Hi,

thanks for the reply. Maybe I was a bit unclear with my question. Let me rephrase it:

Is it possible to check within the code on which platform the app is running? And only in case it's running on Win 10, it uses the new features?

That way, I could ship a single app.

    Thanks again

  • Or asked another way: if I don't use any features specific to Windows 10, will an app (or class lib) that targets the UWP run on Windows 8.1?
