Media Foundation Backward Support, and Windows Server Support RRS feed

  • Question

  • Media Foundation was updated with Windows 7 Release. Are new features avaible on Windows Vista too?

Does Windows 2008 R2 contain Media Foundation and related codecs avaible on Windows 7.

  • For the most part the new features are NOT backported to Vista.  See the SDK docs section "Supported Media Formats in Media Foundation," for example.  For codec support, it is not clear from that docs page if they are supported on Server 2008 R2.  Hopefully, someone from MSFT will clarify.

For Windows versions, the minimum required client and server level is listed for the interfaces on their main docs pages.  See the MF Programming Reference/MF Interfaces section of the docs.  Example:

    IDXVAHD_Device Interface:

    Requirements

    Minimum supported client Windows 7
Minimum supported server Windows Server 2008 R2
    Header Dxvahd.h

Edit: You can determine what decoders and encoders are available on Windows Server 2008 by building the TopoEdit sample in the latest Windows SDK and running it on that version of Windows.
