Can OWA server always be used an outgoing SMTP server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to determine the outgoing SMTP server name. I see no obvious way to retrieve it from an arbitrary machine that can be outside of the domain.

The server is not in the autodiscover XML. MX records cannot be used since they point to the servers that process incoming SMTP messages, and I have no luck authenticating against them to send an outbound message.

Interestingly, the OWA server extracted from the OWAUrl autodiscover element worked as an SMTP server (TLS, post 587) in my limited tests (I tried Office 365 mailbox and a couple of prem Exchange 2013 installations).

Will this always be the case for an arbitrary Exchange installation?

    Thanks!

  • just curious, why trying to determine the outgoing SMTP server name specifically?

Just pick one of the exchange server provided by the autodiscover and let exchange find the route to deliver your message externaly.

  • None of them would accept an SMTP connection.

  • By default when install the CAS role in 2013 you should also get the Front Transport Service with it and by default the default Client Frontend receive connector should be created. The OWA Server (or the external EWS endpoint) should be a CAS so it should hold true that the receive connector is on that server unless it's been locked down. (maybe also ask this in the Transport Forum). On 2010 this would be all different because the receive connectors are just on the Hub or Edge server.

  • Interesting... Thanks Glen!

Would MX records point to the same server when front end receive connector is installed?

  • In a conventional configuration yes because the front end transport service is now the Endpoint In/Out for SMTP in an Exchange 2013 org. In the real world a lot of people point their MX's at external services like Postini and EOP or they may deploy the Edge role which then becomes the endpoint.
