XAP Pirating in China RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I have just released a game to the Windows Phone Store.

Unfortunately, I can see that my XAP file is now available on three chinese sites (xap <dot> cn, xapcn <dot> cn and xapbeta <dot> cn).

We already have 400 downloads from just one of these sites and I was wondering if there's anything I can do to stop this as we worked really hard on this product.

I have downloaded my xap file from one of these sites (hosted at http://tinyurl.com/aknmcvn ).

It looks like it is not encrypted in anyway.

    In conclusion, my questions are:

    1) Is there anything I could do to stop these sites from illegally sharing the xap file ?

    2) Shouldn't the XAP files be encrypted ?

    3) Did this happen because I opted to publish in China or do you think that this would have happened anyway ?

    Thank you.

P.S. My game has been published on the 8th of November, 2012 so I am assuming that the XAP files should have been encrypted by now.

  • Would this solution work reliably ?

(It basically checks for WMAppPRHeader.xml and if it does not exist it means that the app has been side-loaded and not through the Marketplace). Not sure if I should use this solution as this is not something oficially supported by MS (I'm assuming) and it may break functionality in subsequent releases).
