MSDN Archive is down. Downloads from MSDN magazine articles will not render. RRS feed

  • Question

  • There are a lot of issue accessing downloads from archive.msdn.microsoft.com.  Every article I've read on MSDN magazine has a code link to archive.msdn.microsoft.com that is not working.  I am specifically looking for an article from the August 2013 edition: archive.msdn.microsoft.com/mag201308SSIS but I have also tested with these random selections and always receive the error:

An error occurred while processing your request.

    Jun 2012: archive.msdn.microsoft.com/mag201206indexing

    Feb 2013:  archive.msdn.microsoft.com/mag201302Causality

    Mar 2013: archive.msdn.microsoft.com/mag201303mvvm2

  • I'm observing the same behavior. Has anyone else been able to access archive.msdn.microsoft.com recently or is this some intermittent issue?

  • Two years later, and archive.msdn.Microsoft.com is still down?

  • I have no problem when I am on https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/

I click Issues and Downloads and can download any article I want.

  • I think the complaint was about archive.msdn.microsoft.com being down.

Here are two links that I've tried to use recently that are not responding at all.

One is the sample code for "Walkthrough: Hosting a Win32 Control in WPF", at https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/ms752055%28v=vs.100%29.aspx . The sample code, "Hosting a Win32 ListBox Control in WPF Sample", is supposed to be available at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=159998 , but that just hangs, and eventually gives me "This page can’t be displayed. Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to https://archive.msdn.microsoft.com  again. If this error persists, contact your site administrator." Those settings ARE turned on in my Internet Explorer.

Another one is the "Windows 7 Multitouch .NET Interop Sample Library", which used to be at http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/WindowsTouch , but that gives me "Connection refused".

archive.msdn.microsoft.com in general seems to be gone, and there is no apparent replacement, and no apparent announcement of its demise.

  • The site often becomes unavailable for no apparent reason. I'd suggest that you try back later. When I tried the link you provided just now, it was fine. Based on results, it is not a priority to keep this site up 99.98%.

    Hello,

I am not sure where you are finding those links, but when I Bing "Walkthrough: Hosting a Win32 Control in WPF" the top result is:https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/ms752055%28v=vs.100%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

If you are relying on links from an old article, it's not surprising that some may have changed, or become unavailable.

  • Um...yeah...and apart from the meaningless "?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396" appended to the end, that's the EXACT SAME LINK that I posted.

  • just came across broken http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/wpfsamples pointed to by https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/wpf/advanced/advanced-text-formatting (All code examples within this document can be found in the Advanced Text Formatting Sample.). Seems to take some time to resolve to the broken link, shows web.vortex.microsoft.com at some point and some other addresses at bottom-right status text in latest Firefox

  • Go to https://msdn.microsoft.com/magazine, select "Issues and Downloads" and then the year.  You'll see breadcrumbs at the top of the web page where you can select the year link.  Do that and you'll be presented with a menu of each magazine and a link to download the code for any article in it.
