Win 8.1 app updates RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are working with a publisher who requires an update to their Win 8.1 app.  They are still considering an update to UWP, but for now, this update is critical.  Is there any blocker to submitting and update to their Win 8.1 app now that Win 10 and UWP are the main driver?  Is there a cutoff date before Win 8.1 updates are no longer accepted?

Any guidance or detail would be great.

If you plan to update your Windows 8.1 app to UWP, you might refer to this document to make your source code and skills port smoothly to Windows 10. But please note that for Windows 10, you should always upload the .appxupload file as your package in Dev Center, not the .appx or appxbundle. More details, see Packaging UWP apps for Windows 10.

There do exist a lot of features that UWP have but not supported for Windows 8.x app, like package flights and gradual package rollout. Actually UWP further evolves the Windows Runtime model and bring it into the Windows 10 unified core. Windows 10 makes it easier to develop apps for the UWP with just one API set, one app package, and one store to reach all. Thus, it’s highly recommended to update to UWP.
For more details, please refer to Intro to the Universal Windows Platform.
However, we don’t know if there exists a cutoff date when Windows 8.1 updates are no longer valid currently. But you can keep your app with both UWP package and Windows 8.1 package to target on different device family. Just update the app as usual, add a new package without deleting the Windows 8.1 one. For this question, you could see this thread and refer to lia’s and my reply.
