there is no designer available when using xamarin forms, either through visual studio, or xamarin studio.

not free, third party, still in beta.

you do not need a designer to use XF.

Gorilla is free at the moment and does a decent job. XenForms us in early beta and can help getting started with xaml pages. And there is an alpha xaml previewer for xamarin studio on mac which will come to VS

The XAML preview alpha only works with Xamarin studio not Visual Studio, it's supposed to be coming to Visual Studio later....no idea how later though.

Although WPF does have a XAML designer, most people hand code the XAML as its much cleaner.

Update to the thread for future searchers. The feature is now in Visual Studio. I'm running VS 2015 w/ Xamarin v4.2.0.695

Visual Studio on Windows Use the View > Other Windows > Xamarin.Forms Previewer menu in Visual Studio to open the preview window. Use the Window > New Vertical Tab Group menu to position it side-by-side.

Why not just use the emulator?

    1) Blind coding is good practice and will help build a better understanding in how each OS and Xamarin interepts the XAML.

    2) You're going to want to preview on more than 1 source anyway to make sure your apps look good across all platforms/devices!

    3) Previewers will never be able to generate accurate representations of views when they are driven by a datasource (eg, xml or json)

    @LoneLy

It's very beta at the moment. They are working on it. Previewing doesn't work for me at the moment.

The preview feature is very useful for visualizing your basic xaml layout instead of having to spin up an emulator to check if you've used the correct horizontal alignment etc. It's not meant to be an exact representation, for that you need an emulator or rendered on an actual device and emulators don't always render like a device in my experience.

In order for the previewer to work in Windows, you need to have your Mac Agent connected. Yes, event to preview android. It's weird, but that's the way the previewer works.

is it the case also for VS2017 and how about inspector?

I have not tried VS2017RC yet, so I can't say. Does the documentation for the release say that you no longer need a mac agent connected?

The same here. I asked it on stackoverflow and one guy claimed that the only way to preview it is to use Gorilla Player. Still trying to figure it all out - there are too many "this goes with that but does not support something....".

    stackoverflow.com/questions/40645418/vs-how-to-enable-xaml-visual-editor-for-xaml-files-outside-of-wpf-project

I watched some tutorials - even some paid one on Udemy - and most of it really talk about about goodies but not the obstacles like that.

Continue searching for the right explanation though.

I think the preview now works, you will need the latest update though, I haven't tested but according to this link below we should be able to use the preview now.

Hi, I installed VS 2017 RC just to use this feature (hoping the dependency for Mac agent would have been removed) but it is still failing silently with a blue blank page.

Hey Xamarin, would be great to get some statement on this!

I cannot seem to add a blank MaterDetailPage in Visual Studio 2015 CE (InitializeComponent() and MasterPage both gives errors) and I also get errors that there is no editor available when trying to get fixes.

I love Xamarin but the form previewer is a joke. It is a complete waste of time to try to make it work. I have followed every suggestions in all the post I can find and get very sporadic success. When will the Visual Studio/Xamarin team take this tool seriously - either remove it or support it!

i for one hand agree with the previous statement!! I've tried every solution presented..done my own outside research tried different ways of execution to no avail. There seems to be no help from the outside community yet they promote xamarin live. Can't even find the option in the Tools section. Like in the official video.

Take a look at LiveXAML, it's absolutely amazing. It works directly in emulators, in debug mode https://forums.xamarin.com/discussion/101703/livexaml-ability-to-develop-your-app-in-runtime#latest

That looks promising but unfortunately we can't use emulators as they don't pick up our DNS severs and we're not allowed to override HTTPS certificate callbacks etc etc so we have to develop on hardware.

Even a semi robust previewer would be a start, the abandonment of the Forms Preview pluggin was a major disappointment, I think they are aware of that fact though....I've bleated about it a lot on twitter to Xamarin,
