    Do you mean sqlExpress Edition...

Where are you downloading Sql From?

If you are trying to install a version of Sql on your XP machine, you should install Sql Server 2008 Express

well. i have sql 2005 i guess express edition on my system. i use sql server management express on my laptop to view the server and update the database etc. I put sql 2008 server on my desktop last night with xp and it worked fine, no errors installing. I then went to use the sql server management express, but it said it would only work for sql server 2000 and 05. Is there a version for 2008 server express that i can use to update my database, make new tables etc?

you need to generate script of database in last version of sql server in which your database is created. then remove sys.object in script file then execute that modified script in newer version of sql server which ever you want. It will create stucture of database ( Tables, Store Porcedures, and views, functions etc.)
