.NET Framework 4.0 Installation failure - Installation already in progress? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to get the 4.0 framework installed, and while everything starts up fine, it quickly runs into this error from the log:

    OS Version = 6.1.7601, Platform 2, Service Pack 1

    OS Description = Windows 7 - x64 Home Premium Edition Service Pack 1
    CommandLine = ...Setup.exe /x86 /x64
    TimeZone = Eastern Daylight Time
    Initial LCID = 1033
    Using Simultaneous Download and Install mechanism
    Operation: Installing
    Package Name = Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Setup
    Package Version = 4.0.30319
    User Experience Data Collection Policy: Disabled
    Number of applicable items: 11
    ...
    Final Result: Installation failed with error code: (0x00000652), "Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install. " (Elapsed time: 0 00:00:49).

    I'm not sure where/how another installation is running, nor how I can locate it to cancel. As far as I can tell, I'm running the most recent version; nothing shows up in Windows Update. I'm a bit perplexed at the moment.

  • Still unsure as to why the 4.0 wouldn't install, but I tried the newer 4.5 instead. Installation worked fine, and the applications I need work with it as well.

  • Hi drkGreyFox,

    You may have a Windows Installer issue, where another Windows installation is in progress.

    Below is my suggestion.

    Step 1: Check if you are able to install in clean boot.

    To put the computer in clean boot state follow the steps in the article “How to perform Clean Boot” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

    Step 2: Check the Windows Installer Service.

    1.Click Start, in the start search box, type Services and press Enter.

    2.Scroll down and find the Windows Installer.  Double-click “Windows Installer” in the Services list.

    3.On the General tab, make sure the service is started under “Service status”.

    4.If the service is not already running, under Service status, click Start, and then click OK.

    Step 3:  Unregister and re-register the Windows Installer

    1.Click Start, in the start search box, type MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER, and then click OK.

    2.Click Start, in the start search box, type MSIEXEC /REGSERVER, and then click OK. After you run this command, the operation is complete.

    3.Now, try your installation again.

    If the suggestion don’t resolved your issue, please use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.cab from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://skydrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

    Best Regards.

  • I ran through the clean boot process, etc., and the installation still failed.

    Uploaded the logs:

    I can't link it directly without verifying my account, and can't find the information on how to do that.
