compiling problems: written in VS2012 compiling with VS2015

    Question

  • As will become clear immediately...I am a complete novice. I have code that was written with visual studio 2012 and compiled fine. I have Visual studio 2015 (and not VS2012). When I try to compile a get well over a thousand errors largely the issue seems to be broken references (i.e. "type or namespace name 'blank' could not be found). Even when I re-set the paths for the references (the files are all there) the errors change but remain in the hundreds?!

I've now spent two months trying to figure this out without resorting to asking here...sadly I simply can't figure it out. Can anyone help?

  • Hi Sadly,

    Thanks for your post.

Could you please tell me your project type and development language.

Generally we can open the project which created in VS2012 in VS2015 successfully. But there might be some compatible issues.

And for your problem. I think there exist some compatibility issues when upgrade your project to VS2015.

If your development language is C++, you can take a look at the following document about "Porting, Migrating, and Upgrading Visual Studio Projects"

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh266747.aspx

In addition, please also check the Compatibility with previous releases in the following document :

    https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/products/visual-studio-2015-compatibility-vs.aspx

By the way, if possible, please share us a simple project to us so we could reproduce your issue in our side then we could help to troubleshoot it.

    Best Regards,

  • Xiao:

Thank you! I finally got the code to compile with no errors. It is a solution with 9 projects, C++ and C#. I wish I had turned to "Questions" sooner.
