Customizing SP Foundation layout pages? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Using Visual Studio and a master page picker webpart based of the v4, we've created a custom master page for a new Foundation site, but we can't figure out how to set  custom layout pages for it.

Is this doable? Is there a work around? Can we edit the default layout page?

    Much thanks!

  • I'm assuming you mean the text layouts?  They can't be customized -- well they might be able to be customized but it would take a lot of work.  I can't cite a specific source on the topic other than to say we discuss the fact they can't be customized in the book I link to in my signature and we confirmed the facts were correct with people who'd know.

What is it specifically you are trying to do?

  • Thanks John, sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm used to MOSS. We're just getting acquainted with 2010 Foundation and fumbling around quite a bit.

We created a new custom.master page.

We'd like to create 5 different layout pages that inherit custom.master.

In MOSS, when we'd create a new page through the GUI, we'd be asked to select a Page Layout. This is the part we need help with. How do we assign a layout page to a SP page?

    Thanks again,

    Scott

  • If you are using SPF you don't have the ability to use Page Layouts.  They require publishing which is only available with SharePoint Server.

  • Just imagine you can only use the out of box Blank Web Part page and the Welcome Page.  Make sure your masterpage displays those OK and you are 80% there already :-)

  • I think you mean the custom web part page template talked about here:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc767465.aspx

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd583147(v=office.11).aspx

In SharePoint 2010, the Web Part Page content type contains the URL to the web part page creation form:  /_layouts/spcf.aspx

  • Layouts pages require publishing, which is only available in Server.  SPF is just the base, free version...no publishing.

  • I am using SharePoint fondation2010. I am trying to create custom webpart page layout.I got few reference which says about the creating custom webpart page layout in 2007. But not able to find any reference in SP2010. Especially on customizing spcf.aspx file in SP2010.

    The link i referred: http://wsslayouts.blogspot.com/2008/06/layout-pages-for-wss-30.html

Any reference/links would be a great help.

  • SharePoint Foundation 2010 -- specifically the wiki enabled team sites, use what is called Text Layouts.  These cannot be customized.  Is that what you are referring to?

  • Hi John:

Thank you for the reply. I have created site collection using team site template (SP foundation 2010). Once site collection created, Go to View All site content ---Click on Create---Click on Page-- select Web Part Page----Click Create. You get a set of page layouts (like header, Footer, 3 columns) list to select and create a page.

Here, I want to create my custom page layout. I was able to populate the Layout list with my custom layouts using custom spcf.aspx file (in layouts folder), but the issue is when the page is getting created, errors pops up in while passing some arguments to owssvr.dll.

I have seen in blog (http://wsslayouts.blogspot.com/2008/06/layout-pages-for-wss-30.html) it is possible to create a custom web part layout page. But the example is on Moss 2007.

    I don’t see any reference in 2010.

Any ideas/links towards this issue would be great help.

    Thanks!

    Ravi
