Cannot install/update .NET security update (KB2656352 and KB982168) with Automatic Updates or Manual RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I have Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition x86 machine. If I check In Windows Update, and click express installation. I got 2 High Important update need to be installed in my machine. Those KB is KB2656352 and KB982168 .

I tried to install those update using Automatic update. But it doesn't work (Failed to install). Even when I try to install those update using manual update. It also doesn't work.

Tried so many way I got from the internet. Like uninstall all the .NET version, Uninstall from the newest to older, Install from the older to newest, reinstall the framework 3.5 full package and apply KB. But still no luck.

Is there anyone in here can help me to resolve this issue quickly?

I also attached the log I grab from %temp% folder below :

  • First, show us which versions of the .NET Framework are installed on your system. Run this tool:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx

with .NET Framework 2.0 selected, then post the first 15 lines and last 15 lines of tool output here.

    From your log excerpt:

"Product: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 -- Installation failed."

KB982168 is a cumulative update for .NET 2.0/3.0/3.5, and your failure appears to be in SP2 for .NET 2.0.

In that case, you should try removing .NET 3.5 (if present), 3.0 (if present, then 2.0 in that order, then clear your %temp% directory, disable your AV software, then use this cumulative installer for .NET 2.0. 3.0 and 3.5 through 3.5 SP1, run as administrator:

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f-438c-988e-fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe

If the above steps fail, provide complete logs as follows:

Please collect your install logs with this:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E0DA314F-6216-4A18-BC6B-7D29CF83AF20&displaylang=e&displaylang=en

After you run Collect.exe, you'll find vslogs.cab in your %temp% directory. Please upload vslogs.cab to a public site, like SkyDrive, and post the link here.

For your suggestion to uninstall .NET3.5, 3.0, then 2.0 and then clear %temp% directory, disable AV software, then use cumulative installer as administrator. I already tried that technique over and over. But still no luck.

  • Hi Softholic,

Seems your error is like this

    "MSI (s) (C8:C4) [15:34:48:919]: MainEngineThread is returning 1612
The installation source for this product is not available.  Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.
    C:\WINDOWS\Installer\d0790.msi"

The error shows that may cause is not belongs to .NET. Also, .NET verifies as well on your OS.

So please refer to this blog

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/smondal/archive/2009/12/03/the-installation-source-for-this-product-is-not-available-verify-that-the-source-exists-and-that-you-can-access-it.aspx

    Cause

The problem is caused by the following registry keys missing or partially missing:

    • ·  “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Patches"

    · "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Patches"

    Affected Products

Any application that has had a patch applied to it will exhibit the problem.

    Resolution

Although the machine is in what we consider a damaged state we do have a tool that a user can run in an attempt to remedy the stated problem.  Please visit the following article and click on the “Fix it” button

How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971187

Please try the solution to fix and tell us the result.

If you still have errors, I recommend you post your question here:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-windows_update

You will get better support on that forum about Windows Update.

    Thanks,
