SharePoint Online - CSS style recommendation

We are exploring the CSS customization options in SharePoint online and wanted to check which one we should use and when:

1. CSS injection

2. Alternative CSS Style

Both seems to solve the same purpose so would be good to know what to use when.

You need to inject CSS for the non publishing sites as there is no option to set Alternate CSS style as in publishing sites. Refer to the following post for more information.
