Printing Report LightSwitch HTML Client RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been trying to implement an example from Michael Washington's blog.

To Microsoft, while I truly appreciate Michael's blog and numerous examples, this seems like a very complex way for someone to get printing functionality into their apps.

I am sure it works for some but LS was designed to make getting an HTML5 app up and running quickly, but to do some basic functionality like Print, you really need to be a programmer and understand the guts of web development.

I am not against learning but this could seriously turn people away from LS and the HTML Client.

Would the LS team or Microsoft be willing to put together some detailed documentation on how to accomplish printing, reporting, or exporting to formats that are web friendly like PDF for VS 2013.

There just does not seem to be much out there for VS 2013, all good example are written for VS 2012 and earlier and usually in C# or Silverlight(VS2010). It would be nice for some updated examples that exist for both C# and VB developers for VS2013.

So the question is, "Is there any easy way to setup a report and be able to save and or print said report, without having to write a ton of code with examples for VS 2013?"

  • Hi Ken,

You may follow the thought below if you think there is a ton of code in the blog you provided:

    • prepare the data from database and create the relationship of them
    • create a report using report wizard
    • do some settings

Then it's OK. The blog you provided describes the detailed steps and you may do it step by step.

    Have a nice day!

  • @Yunjie - The steps in the blog are helpful but written in C#, I tried following the steps but kept getting stuck in certain places. I also left a message for the author and I am awaiting a response. Would Microsoft or the LS team be willing to create some detailed documentation on how to accomplish this versus going to a blog, possibly a video.

  • Yunjie Pei, I truly wish you would stop marking questions as answered when they really do not answer the question. The How Do I Videos you reference are outdated and only apply to certain versions of the software. I have not seen many examples that are updated for VS 2013 Lightswitch. Thank you for replying but please refrain from marking the question as answered as I do not feel it has answered the question. Thank you.

  • Michael,

I finally got the entire solution from your blogs working. I cannot thank you enough for sticking with me through many of my questions, it is greatly appreciated. There is so much that went into getting everything ironed out I do not think I could explain it all here without confusing others who might see this in the future but after looking at your latest example I notice this would have been much easier to try and convert. Thanks again!

If you would like to see this finished product in VB so you might be able to add some more code to your blog just let me know I would be willing to share.
