System.IO.FileNotFoundException - Blend and XAML Design view

    Question

  • Just installed Win8 and Express 2012 a day ago. After restarting computer this morning, XAML Designer view got crashed with an error message 'System.IO.FileNotFoundException', even after reinstalling Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows 8.

This problem can also be reproduced with 'XAML WebView control sample' from

    http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/XAML-WebView-control-sample-58ad63f7

The sample can be built and run, even though the Blend is not working.

Here are the detail error msg.

  • I have the exact same problem after I create a windows store app and try and load the MainPage.xaml

  • Here are several more interesting observations related to this issue.

    • For XAML WebView control sample, design view randomly works for about half of xaml pages.
    • Occasionally, VS Express 2012 for Windows 8 can’t be closed with ‘Waiting for a background operation to complete’ forever.
    • On the same machine, Blend and VS Express 2012 for Windows Phone works just fine.

One plausible cause of the problem is in the Blend with VS Express 2012 for Windows 8. Hope the problem will be fixed by an update in the near future.

  • Interesting enough, today after restarting windows 8, a different problem surfaced with Design view on xaml files.  This time, VS displayed the following error msg, and the test apps can no longer be launched in debug/simulator, even though it can be built.

It seems there are endless problems with VS Express 2012 and Blend for Windows, and we are unable to start developing Windows Store app. BTW, VS Express 2012 for Windows Phone is working as expected on the same PC.

  • The problem finally got fixed automatically by recent updates of Win8 and VS2012.

  • Hi, info815

I met the same problem as your's. I have tried installing the VS2012 update 1 and all of Win8 updates, but did not fix the problem. Do you know exactly which update fixed the problem? Thanks.

  • not sure which updates fixed the problem, since they were automatically installed.

  • Any fix to this problem? It's important this bug.

  • I'm interested in a fix as well. Seeing a similar issue (except I have no stack trace). Yesterday: no problem. Today: problem.

  • Can you try bumping up the version number in your manifest  ?. Also make sure the package is uninstalled on your machine.

  • Hmm, I think I may have done this by pure coincidence already. After using a different machine to make some changes and then producing a new store package on the machine with that exhibited the problem, the version number got incremented, and it seems like now I can open the file in Blend and VS 2012 Designer again. Actually, I just verified that I can open ALL XAML files properly in the Designer of VS 2012 again. Before I had a strange mix of files that could and could not be opened in the Designer.

Now here's my reaction to this: Why on earth would bumping the manifest version number cause this to get fixed? And how did you get the idea that it would?

By the way, here's another thread on a similar issue: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/3d8d0f8f-3d8b-4ce4-963f-56411cecf4dc/ They're now cross-linked for anyone who reads the entire thread in either place.

  • The exception message was

The provided package is already installed, and reinstallation of the package was blocked. Check the AppXDeployment-Server event log for details. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80073CFB)

So we figured it could either be due to some stale data in the package installation that causes us fail while registering the designer package for the designer. hence uninstalling and bumping up the version number to make sure that Windows treat it as a new package.
