SharePoint Search Not Working

    Question

  • Hi All,

I having a scenario: we have a web application in local domain, for which the search works.

And for the web application, we have an extended web applicaiton, for which the search does not work.

Server name mappings have not been configured, will that be an issue?

    Kindly suggest some possible solutions

  • Hello Raj,

SharePoint Search can only Search the Default Zone!

To resolve this issue, you should set the “http://intanet.anothersite.com” URL as Default Zone for your web application, then it should work.

For more information about this issue, you could refer to the following blogs:

  • Hi Ravi,

Thanks a lot for your solution.

After Setting the Default Zone URL and updating it in Content Sources, do i need to perform any other actions like IISReset, add any Server Name Mappings?

Can you please mentioned the complete steps after this?

    THanks

  • Hello Raj,

There is no IISReset or server name mapping required.

Start the full crawl it will take some time then you will get the results.

Please let me know after crawling you are getting results or not?

  • Hi Ravi,

    Thanks for confirmation.

I have one more clarification. If i flip flop the Intranet URL to Default URL and add it content source and do a full crawl, Search would be working fine for my Intranet URL but again will my previous Default URL search will not be working right?

Is there a way to make both Default and Intranet URL Search to be working ? or only Default URL search will be working.

For your kind information, this farm is SharePoint 2016.

    Thanks

  • Hello Raj,

Yes, Previous Default URL Search will not work.

As per my knowledge, you can not set Default and extended URL as a Default URL.

As I know only the Default URL search will work.

  • Hi, Raj301189,

It should be possible to search in the internet zone after you extend you web application. I tested with a new zone of different port, I can still search the file.

I want to confirm some information with your issue for reproducing you issue:

    1. Did you update SharePoint 2016 to latest version?
    2. Do you mean that search return no results through the non-default zone when saying “for which the search does not work
    3. Please set the default zone URL to be the starting address in the content source, do a full crawl and check if it works.
    4. Please offer a screenshot about your AAM setting.

    Best Regards

    Jerry Xu

  • Hi Jerry,

Thanks a lot for your response and suggestion.

Please find my responses to your query. please let me know if you need any further from my end.

    1. Yes, we have updated the SharePoint 2016 farm to February 2019 CU.

    2. The search gives the error "Nothing here matches your search" for the non-default URL.

    3. Already Default zone has been set as starting address  in the content source.

    4. AAM Settings.

    https://xxxx.localdomain.com    default zone https://xxxx.localdomain.com

    https://yyyy.differentdomain.com  Intranet Zone https://yyyy.differentdomain.com

For your kind information: The non default zone' FQDN is in different domain other than local domain.

Could you please help me further with this to resolve this issue please. I need to make this working for non default zone as well.

If in case there is an option, kindly let me know.

  • Hi, Raj301189,

It appears to me that could be a known issue for the security update included in the February 2019 CU.

You can have a check here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4462155/description-of-the-security-update-for-sharepoint-enterprise-server

“After this update is installed, search queries that are executed from a nondefault zone URL (an extended zone) don't return any results.

To resolve this issue, install February 27, 2019, update for SharePoint Enterprise Server 2016 (KB3085363). ”

Feel free to reply with any update.

    Best Regards

  • Hi Jerry,

Thanks a lot for your valuable response.

Do i need to install this update in all the servers (APP & WEB servers) or only in Search application servers?

    Also does it have outage?

    Thanks in advance!!

  • Hi, Raj301189,

It is needed to install this update on all servers. This update may ask you to restart the server after the installation. So please prepare for possible outage.

Also I recommend to do an index reset and a full crawl after the server reboot in order to get everything up and running again.
