  • This is known factor. View only permission will allow user to open the file browser if plug-ins installed otherwise it prompt to save the file.

  • When you give someone the rights to view a file, they have to download the contents anyway as part of the browser session. You can use Office Web Apps to use view in browser, but nothing would stop them opening and saving the file.

The only way to prevent someone saving your document away is to use some like Windows Rights Management Server. This way you can protect the document completely from saving, copying printing etc.

  • There are no security permission that disable document download in document library.

A possible solution is to create two lists, link the items between lists and manage different security on them. An example:

    • create document library that will be used to store only documents and set different permission to custom groups (es. To Group A is allowed view items and to Group B is not allowed)
    • create custom library to store all metadata information regarding documents and add a field link to documents on the other list

In that you have are able to manage who is allowed to downlad documents and who is allowed only to access to metadata.
