SQL server Uninstall


  • Hi, 

    I have tried to uninstall the SQL services on one of the production server but we are getting below error.Kindly suggest how to uninstall the SQL serive without failure.

    1) MSSQL10_50.DEVSQL' is not a valid short file name.

    2) MSRS10_50.DEVSQL' is not a valid short file name

    3) MSAS10_50.DEVSQL' is not a valid short file name

    Could you please share the uninstallation log to us for analysis? You can get it from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\***\Setup Bootstrap\Log\[The latest folder]\Detail.txt. You can share it across Onedrive and put shared link here.


    Based on the error message, this problem can be caused on the file which is stored in a domain. Many times, changing the registry key can help. However, because this is a production server, you'd better not using this method.


    I suggest you creating a new Admin User on this machine and useing this account to uninstall SQL Server, if this cannot work, you'd better opening a case with Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) (, so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist you in a more efficient manner.
