Mirroring possible on Geographically dispersed location? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a  customer who has Data Center across multiple physical location. Network, h/w is not an issue. With these things in to consideration

    1. Can we even implement mirroring within these multiple location(s)

    2. Does the Server needs to be under same Domain name

    3. What are the security issues we need to worry about

    4. What other issues in total we need to be aware of

  • This is fine. We use mirroring to our DR site across a WAN. If the domains are different and untrusted you can still set it up, but you'll have to use certificates for authentication: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186360.aspx. It's a little more complicated but not hugely. The other things to consider are the logins - setting them up on the mirror. For the SQL logins this is easy - you just script them out (with their SIDs) and then add in at the mirror. If you use windows logins for your apps you'll need to reconsider how the applications are going to connect.

  • 1. Yes, you can implement mirroring within these multiple locaitons

    2. The server does not need to be under the same domain name but there are some things to be considered with security/logins

    3. If you are using windows logins the security gets complicated.  If you are using SQL logins the other comment is correct you can just script them out in the mirror.

    4. Be aware of your network speed.  If you mirror in the sync mode you will have to wate for the transaction to complete on both servers before the transaction will complete.  If you mirror in async mode your tansactions will be faster but it is possible for the data on the second server to fall behind in times of heavy load on your main server.

Hope that helped.  Let me know if you would like me to elaborate on 4.
