What file should be opened on Open Project

    Question

  •   Hello.

I have been using VS for a while and after it I used Visual Basic 2008/2012.

I always wondered what file should be opened (Visual Basic had a bunch of files, while Visual Studio has only 2). When we go to Open Project then select a folder, we find one folder and a .sln file, but if we open that folder then we find another .vbproj file. I found no differences between them, but I wanted to know what is the difference between them.

      .sln or .vbproj?

      Thank you.

PS: I am working in VisualBasic, so other languages may have another extension instead of .vbproj.

  • Hi,

The solution (sln) is a container for multiple projects and vbproj is a visual basic project.

To see the difference, you could open the files in a text editor.

You can also look at the following pages:

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/xhkhh4zs.aspx
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb165951.aspx

The common thing is to open the solution file when you want to open the solution.

    With kind regards,

    Konrad

Thank you. I will always open the .sln file then.
