Visual Studio 2010 cannot access project property pages - program hangs. RRS feed

  • Question

  • When attempting to access project properties with a right click on the project, the IDE does not display anything.

F4 brings up a properties page which has only "project dependecies" "root file" and "project namespaces".

When attempting to access Tools-->Options, the IDE hangs.

Windows-->Reset Window Layout resets the window layout, but does not correct the problem with the absent project properties.

This appeared after adding a new project to an existing solution.  However, all solutions and all projects on this machine are now affected.  (Env=Windows 7)

A second development machine using Visual Studio 2010 is unaffected and shows correct properties pages for the projects.

Projects and solutions copied from the bad machine will work properly on the good machine.

These are C++ projects in native language envronment (no managed code).

A "repair" install of VS 2010 and the related Sp1 does not correct the problem.

  • A colleague pointed out the cause of the problem.

The "bad" machine had been operated with two monitors, and the properties pages were displayed on the second monitor.  When the machine was rebooted, it had only one monitor as the second one was unavailable. Visual Studio placed the requested pages off of the visible screen where it last remembered them to be.

Since access to those pages may bring up a modal dialog which is also off-screen, the IDE appears to be hung.

The solution was to plug in a second monitor.
