  • I would suggest you to use SQL Express (or with Advanced Services) for witness, it won't do more than monitor the principal and mirror by sending light weight hearbeet segnals every 1 sec.

here is microsoft recs for express edition 64 bit

    Processor speed:

    • Minimum: 1.4 GHz

    • Recommended: 2.0 GHz or faster

    OS

    Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 64-bit x64 Standard

    RAM:

    • Minimum:512 MB

    • Recommended: 1 GB

    • Maximum: 1 GB for the Database Engine, 4 GB for Reporting Services

  • The answer is it depends on what you can afford . You don't have to really have a high level of SPEC as in case of mirror and principal servers.

  • Hello Adbul,

You can very well use a SQL Server Express Edition which is hosted on a separate server to as a Witness Server in your database mirroring configuration. You can even use a SQL Server 2005 instance as the witness for a SQL Server 2008 mirroring pair. For more information refer the following threadCan SQL Server 2005 act as witness server for SQL Server 2008 mirroring setup?

    Hope that Helps!
