Powerpoint mp4 export cannot be played with mediaelement

    Question

  • Hi experts,

i've exported a Powerpoint .pptx to a mp4 movie. Now i wrote a w8 app with a mediaelement to play the movie, but this does not work. The screen is black but there is no exception thrown.

The movie can also not be played with Windows Media Player. The screens remains black.
VLC Player has no problem to play the movie. VLC shows codec information as: Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)

    My software:
Windows 8.1 Enterprise Edition (no N or KN edition) 64 bit
    Media Player 12.0.9600.17031
    Powerpoint 2013
    All updates are installed

    My video device:
AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series

Is that codec part of Windows 8.1 Enterprise?
If not, is there a codec pack from Microsoft?
The best solution for me would be a single H264 codec without the need to install a codec package.

Thanks a lot and thanks in advance
    Ulrich

  • Hello Ulrich,

We do support h.264 and AVC content. If you can upload a file that reproduces the problem to your OneDrive and then post a link here I can take a look at it and see if I can find a reason for the problem that you are seeing.

  • Hi James,

    thanks for your help.

I've uploaded a small solution, which plays a mp4 sample (coded also with H264).

This has the same effekt, a black Screen. Audio is ok. The same with Windows Media Player. VLC can play it.

I think this is not a matter of the mediaelement. Does the mediaelement use the Windows Media Player internally?

  • Hello Ulrich,

I apologize it appears that my request was unclear. I am asking for an actual MP4 that you encoded that reproduces the issue. I have tools that allow me to pull apart the MP4 file itself and validate it. So please upload a small MP4 file that plays the audio but not the video as stated in your post. Please make sure that you own the copyright to the MP4 file before uploading it and posting the link publicly.

    Thanks,

    James

  • Hi James,

I've solved the problem: After I switched the video card driver back to an earlier version everything works fine!

It seems that the current sony vaio driver is not working correctly at Windows 8.1. The mp4 file was ok.

    Thanks for your help
