is the login format domain\adminUser\alias not supported in exch 2007 for IMAP? RRS feed

  • Question

  • hello

We have a requirement to traverse through different exchange email folders using a single admin user Id and using IMAP.
In other words the admin user must have the ability to impersonate and read emails of others.
It used to work well in exchange 2003, but when I tried with  exch 2007 SP1 it throws "LOGIN failed".
After spending some time I found it is supported from rollup update 4 onwards (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;937359).
I installed this update but still no luck.

I am stuck at this point, every time I try I get a LOGIN failed error.
Can anyone please give me more details about how to configure IMAP impersonation at the exchange server side (for exchange 2007)?
Also is this supported in exchange 2010?

(For now I have set the IMAP authentication method as plain text - Basic )

    thanks in advance

  • I think this is your problem:

    (from the article you linked)
"If you want to log on to another user’s mailbox by using different credentials, you must use Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access."

I assume it's saying that in E2007, you can only open your own mailbox using IMAP.

  • Sorry, I disagree.  The page says "This feature or ability is now available in Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Rollup Update 4."

I spent some good time experimenting it, and found that it will work.

Lets say there are tow users - A and B

If  A is granted "Receive as" permission to B's mailbox, then A can read B's mail  using IMAP

  • To me, it sounds like it is saying that the DOMAIN\USER\MAILBOX feature is available in RU4, but not delegate access.  But anyway, it sounds like you have got it working now?
