Best way to determine why a Win32 app failed to start

    Question

  • Most of the Win32 and C# applications I have written run well on the Windows 8 32-bit preview which I have been testing.  However, I have one small Win32 application I wrote which refuses to start, and fails to display any error message.  What is the best way to determine why this application failed to launch?

Answers

  • run it under a debugger like windbg, which is built-in in the 64bit version with tools. For 32bit you probably want to download the windows 8 tools or just download the windows 7 SDK web installer
